Has Textual Criticism enabled the scholars to restore “the originals” as some modern version proponents affirm?
Not at all.

Luke 4:44 “Galilee” or “Judea”? A Geographical Blunder in the Vatican Versions
KJB (Revised Version 1881, ASV 1901, Holman Standard, ISV) – “And he preached in the synagogues of GALILEE.”
ESV – “And he was preaching in the synagogues of JUDEA.”
Luke 4:44 compared to Matthew 4:23 and Mark 1:39.
In all three Synoptic gospels we clearly see that Jesus was ministering in Galilee, not Judea. Israel was divided into three main sections – Galilee in the north, along with the sea of Galilee (also known as the sea of Gennesaret -cp. Mat. 4:23; Mk. 1:16 & Luke 5:1), Samaria in the middle, and some 50 to 60 miles to the south was Judea.
There is a TEXTUAL issue involved here; not just a difference in translation. Nobody disputes the fact that Jesus was literally in the region known as Galilee during the events recorded in these Scriptures. Not even those who try to defend the UBS critical text that wrongly tells us He was in JUDEA.

Well, saints, the NASB 2020 is at it again.
JOHN 1:18 – KJB (RV, ASV) versus NASB 1995 versus NASB 2020.
KJB – “No man hath seen God at any time; THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”
NASB 1962 to 1995 editions – “No one has seen God at any time; THE ONLY BEGOTTEN GOD who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.”
NASB 2020 edition has now changed its text once again after some 10 different editions. It now reads: “No one has seen God at any time; GOD THE ONLY SON, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him.” – NO Greek text reads this way.
ESV – “No one has every seen God; THE ONLY GOD, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”
NIV 1973 edition – “No man has ever seen God, but GOD THE ONLY SON, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.
NIV 1984 edition – “No one has ever seen God, but GOD THE ONE AND ONLY, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.”
NIV 2011 edition – “No one has ever seen God, but THE ONE AND ONLY SON, WHO IS HIMSELF GOD and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”
The reading followed by the NASB 1995 edition teaches that there are TWO Gods. Count ’em. There is the unseen God and then there is the only begotten God who declares the invisible God no one has seen.
The new NASB 2020 now reads like the NIV 1973 edition, which they have twice since then rejected, and there is NO Greek text that reads “God the only Son.”
The ESV is utter confusion and contradiction. There we have the unseen God, and then there is the only God, who makes the unseen God known. Hellooo…….Is anybody home in there?
The NIVs have THREE different translations of this one verse, and the modern versions don’t even agree among themselves.
John 5:3-4 The Troubling of the Water.
Many modern versions and some “scholars” cast doubt on the authenticity of the inspired words we find in John 5:3-4. Here we read of the pool of Bethesda, having five porches.
KJB (NASB 1963 to 1995 editions, Holman Standard) – John 5:3 – In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, WAITING FOR THE MOVING OF THE WATER.
John 5:4 – FOR AN ANGEL WENT DOWN AT A CERTAIN SEASON INTO THE POOL, AND TROUBLED THE WATER: WHOSOEVER THEN FIRST AFTER THE TROUBLING OF THE WATER STEPPED IN WAS MADE WHOLE OF WHATSOEVER DISEASE HE HAD.

ESV and the NIV
The ESV rejects the Hebrew text and follows PART of the so called Greek LXX, while the NIV follows ANOTHER PART of the Greek LXX.
ESV – “And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, WITH SONGS [a] and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals.”
Footnotes:

NIV – “David and all Israel were celebrating WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.”
The NIV 1984 edition notes in its Footnote that the Hebrew text does not contain the words “WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT” (or mightily) and that it reads like the KJB has it.
Yet you will notice that the ESV mentions WITH SONGS, while the NIV does not, but the NIV has “WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT” but the ESV does not include these words.
What is happening here is that both the ESV and the NIV are picking out PARTS of the LXX reading in the same verse, as they both reject the Hebrew reading, and they go with DIFFERENT PARTS and NOT ALL that the so called Greek Septuagint has in this one verse.
What the LXX actually has is this – It reads: “And David and THE CHILDREN OF (Not in ESV or NIV) of Israel were playing before the Lord ON WELL TUNED INSTRUMENTS (Not in ESV or NIV) MIGHTILY (In NIV but not in ESV or Hebrew) AND WITH SONGS (In the ESV but not in the NIV or in the Hebrew) and with harps, and with flutes, and with drums, and with cymbals and with pipes.”

So what we see here is that both the ESV and NIV (along with Dan Wallace’s NET version) have rejected the Hebrew text, and then each has picked up just PART of what the so called LXX says, and not the same parts!
The Catholic Connection
The earlier Catholic Douay-Rheims 1610 and the Douay Version 1950 followed the Hebrew text and read like the KJB.
“But David and all Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of wood, on harps and lutes and timbrels and cornets and cymbals.”
BUT the newer Catholic versions like the St. Joseph New American bible 1970 and the New Jerusalem bible 1985 have likewise rejected the Hebrew text and followed the so called Greek Septuagint and even included BOTH readings found in it saying:
2 Samuel 6:6 “David and the whole House of Israel danced before Yahweh WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT SINGING to the accompaniment of harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.” New Jerusalem bible 1985.
Then it footnotes telling us that “WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT SINGING” comes from the Greek Septuagint, but is not found in the Hebrew text.
And they call these shenanigans the “science” of textual criticism.
I think God has a different term for it. He calls it PERVERTING the words of God.

Judges 14:15 – The SEVENTH Day or The FOURTH Day or THE NEXT DAY?

The Voice of 2012, one of the new Critical Text versions, actually says: “God struck down 75 men”
The Holman Christian Standard Bible 2009 has come up with a reading that is different from them all. The HCSB now says: “He struck down 70 men out of 50,000 men.”
1 Samuel 13:1 Here we read: “Saul reigned ONE year; and when he had reigned TWO years over Israel, Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel.” reading – ONE/TWO years (NKJV, KJB, Geneva, Judaica Press Tanach, Orthodox Jewish Bible), or 40/32 (NASB 1972-77 editions) or 30/42 (NASB 1995 edition, NIV), OR 30 years/ 40 years (NET) or _____years and______and two years (RSV, NRSV, ESV 2001 edition, St. Joseph New American Bible 1970, Catholic New Jerusalem 1985), or “was 40 years old…and when he had reigned 2 years” (Amplified bible 1987) or “____years old and reigned 2 years” (Complete Jewish bible, Knox bible) or “was 30 years old…ruled for 42 years” (ISV, Common English Bible) or “32 years old…reigned for 22 years” in the 1989 Revised English Bible, or even “was 50 years old and reigned 22 years.”!
But wait. There’s even more. The ESV 2001 edition had “Saul was________years old when he began to reign, and he reigned____and two years over Israel.” But now the 2011, 2016 editions of the ESV have come out and now have the perhaps even more ridiculous reading of “Saul LIVED FOR ONE YEAR AND THEN BECAME KING, and when he had reigned FOR TWO YEARS over Israel, Saul chose 3000 men of Israel…”.

Does Judah RULE WITH God or IS UNRULY AGAINST God?
Is Judah FAITHFUL WITH THE SAINTS (KJB) or is it THE HOLY ONE WHO IS FAITHFUL (NKJV)?
11:12 KJB “But Judah yet RULETH WITH GOD, AND IS FAITHFUL WITH THE SAINTS.”
Colossians 3:6 – “the wrath of God cometh ON THE CHILDREN O. OBEDIENCE.” (Revised Version, ASV, NRSV, NASB 1995 edition, NET, ISV 2014)
“For which things sake the wrath of God cometh ON THE CHILDREN OF DISOBEDIENCE.”
One of the whackiest examples of the so called “science” of textual criticism and how it really works is found in Colossians 3:6 and the phrase “the children of disobedience”.
In Greek this phrase is composed of 5 words. It is also found in Ephesians 5:6 and the phrase refers to those who remain in unbelief of the gospel and are the children of the devil. They are not among the redeemed children of God.
This reading is found in the Majority of all remaining Greek manuscripts including Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus (A), C and D correction. It is also found in the Latin Vulgate, the Greek Lectionaries, the Old Latin copies of ar, c, d, dem, div, f, g, mon, t, x and z as well as the Syriac Peshitta, Harclean, the Coptic Boharic, Armenian, Ethiopic, Georgian and Slavonic ancient versions.
Westcott and Hort originally omitted the phrase altogether because not found in Vaticanus, P46 and D original. The Nestle critical text 4th edition 1934 as well as the Nestle 21st edition 1975 also omitted the phrase and simply said: “For which things sake the wrath of God comes.”
However, now the Nestle-Aland 27th edition and the 28th edition have decided to put the phrase back into their critical Greek texts and it is found there today.
Now here is the curious thing. In spite of the fact that Westcott and Hort omitted the phrase, yet reading like the King James Bible were the Revised Version of 1881 and the ASV of 1901. Both read – “cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.”
But now that the phrase is put back into the critical Greek text, the more modern versions like the NIV and ESV omit it! Go figure!
But wait! There’s more. The NASB 1963, 1972, 1973 and 1977 editions all OMITTED the phrase and read: “For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come.” But in 1995 the new NASB has put it back in and it now reads: “the wrath of God will come UPON THE SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE.”
The liberal RSV was the first major version to actually follow the then Nestle critical text and it omitted the phrase.
But then the 1989 New RSV put it back in and read rather incorrectly: “On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.” Footnote – “Greek – the children of disobedience”.
But then the revision of the revision of the revision – the ESV 2011 – has now gone back to omitting it again and simply reads: “On account of these the wrath of God is coming.” and then footnotes: “Some manuscripts add ‘the sons of disobedience.'” SOME???!!!
Other critical text versions that omitted the phrase are Goodspeed 1943, Weymouth 1902, Rotherham’s Emphasized bible 1902 and the Jehovah Witness New Word Translation.
“For which things sake the wrath of God cometh ON THE CHILDREN OF DISOBEDIENCE.”
Bible translations that include the reading of “the children of disobedience” are Wycliffe 1395, Tyndale 1525, Coverdale 1535, Bishops’ Bible 1568, the Douay-Rheims 1582, the Geneva Bible 1587 – “wrath of God commeth on the children of disobedience.”, the Beza New Testament 1599, the King James Bible, the Bill Bible 1671, Wesley translation 1755, Darby 1890, Young’s 1898, the Revised Version 1885, the ASV 1901, J.B. The 2014 ISV reads: “It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient.” Footnote – Literally “on the sons of disobedience.”
Even Dan Wallace’s NET version reads: “Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience.”
But then he has these typical bible agnostic, mumbo jumbo, “Yea, hath God said?” footnotes – “there are other places in which B and P46 share errant readings of omission. Nevertheless, the strength of the internal evidence against the longer reading is at least sufficient TO CAUSE DOUBT HERE. THE DECISION TO RETAIN THE WORDS in the text IS LESS THAN CERTAIN.” (Caps are mine)

The Catholic Connection
Among the Catholic versions the phrase “among the children of disobedience” IS found in the Douay-Rheims of 1582 and the Douay of 1950.
Then the 1969 Jerusalem bible and the 1970 St. Joseph NAB omitted it, but then the 1985 New Jerusalem put it back in and so does the Catholic Public Domain Version of 2009!
Foreign Language Bibles
Foreign language Bibles that correctly read “the wrath of God comes UPON THE CHILDREN OF DISOBEDIENCE” are the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras 1569 – “por estas cosas la ira de Dios viene sobre los hijos de rebelión”, the Spanish Reina Valera’s 1909, 1960, 1995 – “la ira de Dios viene sobre los hijos de desobediencia”, the French Martin 1744, the Ostervald 1996 and the 2007 Louis Segond – “la colère de Dieu vient sur les enfants rebelles”, Luther’s German Bible 1545 and the 2000 Schlachter Bible – “über die Söhne des Ungehorsams”, the Italian Diodati 1649, La Nuova Diodati 1991 and Italian Riveduta 2006 – “l?ira di Dio sopra i figliuoli della disubbidienza.”, the Portuguese Corrigenda 2009, Portuguese NIV version 2000 – “sobre os filhos da desobediência”, the Tagalog Ang Salita ng Diyos bible 1998, Romanian Cornilescu and Fidela bibles 2014, the Smith & van Dyke Arabic Bible, the Dutch Staten Vertaling Bible, the Czeck BKR, and the Polish Updated Gdansk Bible 2013.
The “Ever Dependable” NIVs
Even though the NIV English version omits these words, yet the NIV Portuguese version includes them.
A Biblia Sagrada em Portugués AND the NIV Portuguese edition 2000 Nova Versão Internacional (even though it is not in the English edition of the NIV) – “a ira de Deus sobre os filhos da desobediência.”
the Modern Greek Bible and the Greek text used by the Greek Orthodox churches all over the world = “the children of disobedience”
And the Modern Hebrew Bible –
In summary, the ever changing modern critical Greek text versions that OMIT the phrase “upon the children of disobedience” are the REB (Revised English Bible) 1989, the NIV 1984, 2011, the ESV 2011, and the NASB 1977, but the modern critical Greek text versions that INCLUDE the phrase are the Holman Standard 2009, NET, Common English Bible 2011, The Voice 2012, the ISV 2014 and the NASB 1995!
Hebrews 2:7 KJB – “Thou madest him A LITTLE LOWER than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, AND DIDST SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS.” (R.V., ASV, NASB 1995, NKJV, The Voice 2012, The Passion Translation 2017)
ESV – “You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor.” (NIV, NET, Holman)
The full reading for this verse that includes the words at the end of the verse – “AND DIDST SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS.” are found in Sinaiticus, A, C, D original, 0150 0243 6 33 81 88 104 181 256 263 330 365 424 436 451 459 629 1573 1739 1877 1881 1991 1912 1962 1985 2127 2464 2492, the Old Latin copies of ar, b, c, d, den, div, e, f, v, x, z, the Syriac Peshitta, Harkelian, the Coptic Sahidic, Boharic, Armenian, Ehtiopic, Georgian and Slavonic ancient versions.
The Critical Text versions don’t even agree with each other. Here Vaticanus and P46 omit the words – “AND DIDST SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS” and so too do versions like the NIV, ESV, ISV, NET, Common English Bible and the Holman Standard all OMIT these words.
But these same two manuscripts, Vaticanus and P46, also omit the words “under him” in the next verse where we read “in that he put all in subjection UNDER HIM”, and this time these same versions that omitted all the words from verse 7 because of Vaticanus and P46, now included them in verse 8. You see, this is how their “science” of textual criticism works.
But not even all the Critical Text versions agree with each other – not even close.
This time even the NASB 1963-1995, RV 1881, ASV 1901 (all critical text versions) include the words “AND DIDST SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS” in Hebrews 2:7, as well as other Critical Text versions like Weymouth 1912, Goodspeed 1923, Rotherham 1902 and even the Jehovah Witness New World Translation.
See how the “scholars”, even among those using the ever changing Critical Greek text, don’t agree among themselves. This same confusion is constantly repeated in the new Bible of the Month versions that continue to pour off the presses.
